Land Surveys was engaged to deliver high-level survey support for the construction of 3.5kms of new ballasted track, eight turnouts, site drainage and the installation of buffer stops and level crossings for Australia’s largest private rail freight operator.

The construction of this new rail infrastructure for Pacific National Rail’s Intermodal Terminal at St Mary’s required a permanent Land Surveys crew on site daily to support construction contractor Rhomberg’s requirements.

Land Surveys undertook multiple trolley based surveys for data collection before construction of the required facilities could be undertaken and completed by Rhomberg. Across a 12-month period senior and associated Land Surveys specialists worked daily on site.

The surveying to upgrade existing rail sidings included pre-and post-construction of the tracks via trolleys, from ballast and sleeper placement phases through to track laying, and follow-up surveying to ensure that all key track specifications were met.

The works were completed on time and fulfilled all of Rhomberg’s expectations. The freight hub is on track to enable rail freight to reach a mode share of  25 per cent of all containers handled through Sydney’s Port Botany. It facilitates up to five daily freight train services between the port and the St  Mary’s freight hub, each 600-metre long freight train service transporting 87 shipping containers – all based on Land Surveys’ safely and correctly delivered surveys.
