Overview
The Metro Tunnel is one of Melbourne’s most transformative transport infrastructure projects, delivering a new metro tunnel linking the Western suburbs to the South-east through the city. Designed to boost capacity during peak periods, the tunnel will enable more than 500,000 additional passengers per week to move efficiently across the network.
The project scope was immense, covering a lot of ground, which included:
- Construction of twin 9km rail tunnels linking the west and south-east of the city
- Development of five new underground stations
- Direct City Loop connections
- Integration of train/tram interchange at Anzac Station and Domain Interchange
Our Role
This type of large-scale project meant that there were an extensive number of affected properties and assets, which required existing condition surveys to document the state of assets within the zone of influence. This included residential, commercial, retail, and industrial structures, as well as assets within the road and rail corridors.
Our dilapidation surveys captured detailed defect observations, high-resolution digital photography, and georeferenced video footage.
To streamline the process for impacted communities, an online booking system and dedicated telephone hotline were used to facilitate scheduling and communication.
Outcome
These condition surveys provided an essential foundation for responsible construction planning and stakeholder assurance, ensuring existing infrastructure was properly recorded and protected ahead of this project that is set to finish in 2025.
